Enhancing Test Automation with the FireFlink Finder Tool

Daren Khatib5 Min Read

In the world of test automation, software applications frequently receive updates to align with updated client expectations. These updates often bring changes to the application's user interface (UI), including the positions of UI elements, their attributes, and more. As a test engineer, you know that when these changes occur, the test scripts that used to work seamlessly become obsolete, mainly due to alterations in UI element locators.

Normally, dealing with these changes can become quite complex, as it necessitates the manual update of all test scripts to accommodate the modified UI locators. This is a time-consuming and error-prone process.

While there are plugins available in the market to extract UI element locators, they often have limitations, particularly when dealing with shadow DOM elements and iframes. These plugins may not work efficiently in such scenarios, leaving test engineers in a tough spot.

Here's where a valuable tool comes into play – the FireFlink Finder tool. This tool provides a reliable and efficient solution to quickly locate UI element locators, even for shadow DOM and iframes. It's an independent tool that can be downloaded for both Windows and iOS machines.

Using the FireFlink Finder tool is straightforward. You simply input the URL of the webpage under test into the tool. Once the webpage is loaded, you can click the "start recording" button at the top right corner. Now, you can click on the UI elements for which you need locators. The FireFlink Finder automatically captures the locators for each UI element, generating multiple optimal locators for your convenience. It also assigns meaningful names to these locators, including the element type, making them easily recognizable.

Additionally, the FireFlink Finder tool offers the option to seamlessly migrate these locators to the FireFlink Platform according to the associated element repository page. This functionality enables these elements to be reused in your test scripts, saving time and effort. As an added bonus, the FireFlink Finder tool lets you export locators to Excel, so you may use them in any other automation tool of your choice.

After successfully capturing the locators for the UI elements, ending the recording is as simple as clicking the "stop recording" button. This action finalizes the process of recording UI elements on the webpage under test.

The FireFlink Finder tool is not limited to web applications alone; it also performs admirably for mobile applications. The only prerequisite is that a mobile device containing the application you want to test needs to be connected to the computer where the FireFlink Finder tool is installed using a USB cable or connected through emulators and simulators. This connection enables you to extend the FireFlink Finder functionality to mobile app testing, making it a versatile and comprehensive unified solution for test engineers. The FireFlink Finder tool is also capable of generating locators for enterprise applications like Salesforce and MS Dynamics

One of the standout features of FireFlink is its self-healing capabilities. During runtime, FireFlink intelligently prioritizes the most optimal locator, which significantly reduces the chances of script failures caused by unreliable UI locators. This makes the FireFlink Finder tool an indispensable tool for test engineers looking to improve the robustness and efficiency of their test automation environment.

The FireFlink Finder tool simplifies test automation by transforming the identification of UI element locators, even in complex cases such as shadow DOM and iframes. The tool provides a user-friendly interface, unified cross-platform compatibility, and self-healing capabilities. These features make the FireFlink Finder an essential tool for efficient and dependable testing.
